James Buchanan –Who is he? Our presidency, it has held all types of leaders, the strong, and the weak. Over forty people have taken a seat in that office, but I’m here to discuss only one, James Buchanan. Buchanan came from a son of an Irish Immigrant, to a war hero, later an Omniscient attorney. But alas came the white house, he could’ve been a hero once more. Could’ve prevented a national crisis, but he became a complete let down on that subject. His mellowness and not taking a firm stand on the issue of slavery is about to come and bite him, and the country. The first of his troubles came with Dred Scott. Scott was a slave that was taken to a “free state”, thus he thought that he was a free man, but that dream was about to be cut off. Though in James Campaign he said that he would allow the states make these choices, the Supreme Court had other ideas. They ruled that as a slave Scott was not recognized in the constitution as a citizen thus was not allowed freedoms. But not only that but the Missouri compromise was “unconstitutional” this choice, which Buchanan did support (going against his campaign) only a little. But the effect that follows was swift, quick, and raw. As soon as the choice was made to allow white suppression, Abolitionists rose to the sky like the flames of a wildfire. They claimed the Supreme Court was acting in a “holy war”, thus vowing to disobey it. Being the cool and tame president he was, he did not support anything and appointed anti-antagonistic people to his cabinet.
