3.1 Analyse theories of behaviour management.

Effective behaviour management is essential when creating a positive learning environment so that pupils feel safe, learning can occur and they can reach their full potential.

Behaviourist ideas on behaviour management focus on a system of rules and consequences. Positive behaviour is encouraged using positive reinforcement (rewards) and inappropriate behaviour is discouraged by a consequence being put in place or a lack of reward.

Skinner’s theory of operant conditioning uses the idea of rewards and punishments for certain behaviours. Rewards (positive reinforcements) are provided for behaviours that are wanted and punishments (consequences) put in place for behaviour that is less desirable.

If pupils are finding things challenging, they are offered support from the adults in thinking about how their choices could impact themselves and others e.g. if you bang the door, it’s stopping your friends from learning and it would mean that you would get minutes to do at playtime. They are reminded of rewards that are in place for making more appropriate choices and then given take up time to change what they are doing or not.
