Healthcare is always developing. New ways managed care is changing within medical settings as the health care profession works to offer higher quality and cost effective care to patients is reducing the rates. Managed health care plans control costs by setting some specific criteria for selecting specific providers to patients and by establishing formal program to monitor the quality of care being given by the providers. In obvious cases, doctors must get approval before hospitalizations or expensive tests and procedures. When deciding on what we can contribute to or not it become tricky. They must have communication skills, high proficiency in the use of computers and common applications such as word and spread sheets. They must also be familiar with medical coding, insurance practices and software that is used in the medical facility. Most medical assistants must be multiskilled as well when greeting the patients. They may be seeing them when they are checking them in and when they are rooming them. Then the provider comes in. Now when looking into the back-office view, the MA must be able to handle a short and sweet conversation that doesn’t keep them there for more than 5-7 minutes and also, they must be smooth and knowledgably in the skills that need to be taken place such as working ahead and taking urine dips, blood samples, blood pressure, height weight, and pulse. We are the first people who get the general idea on why the patient is there and we transfer that to the physician.
When in schooling, us as medical assistants get the general idea of what we will be doing out there and that is within our scope of practice. But, we mainly learn our skills on the job hands on. Whenever performing a skill, we are under the doctors supervision. There is a gray area that most medical assistants open to litigation.
