Have you ever gone on a camping trip with your friends and family? Did you have good memories you will remember forever? What were your favorite parts about your trip? My annual Memorial day weekend camping trip allowed me to experience these and more. From skipping rocks in the Upper Iowa River and beating down a tree with a bone to hiking to the Coldwater Creek, Memorial day camping is always a trip to remember. The morning of Memorial Day, 2017 started with panic as excitement and anxiety rushed through my veins. I laced my boots and grabbed my army backpack before packing my stuff into the car. Before leaving I hastily grabbed something to eat and ran outside to pack my things. When I jumped in the car I caught the smell of fresh pine trees from an air freshener; and met my friend Michael sitting across from me. Our camp was in the pasture, noticeable by the large blue tarp hanging over our whole campsite. Thankfully for us the camp was already set up by my step dad Mark the night before. Ready to start the weekend, Michael and I headed to a deeper part of the Upper Iowa River called the Corner. We followed a previously cleared path by cows, keeping an eye out for cow pies. When we reached the corner, I saw the river for the first time since Labor Day. The river gave off a dirty smell and it looked much more shallow and murky. As we ran up onto the sandbar next to the river, Michael and I began to pick rocks out of the cold sand and skipped them across the river. I found a piece of driftwood sticking out of the sand, which I used to hit the rocks instead of throwing them.
