Grew up in a rural area a tiny place named Bird Cove, no roads nor electricity until in the 50th. Gasoline lamps lighted up the darkness of our homes. Wood stoves kept bodies warm during the day and at night. Kept the hungry belly filled to content because families were able to cook daily meals on the
In My Paddle to the Sea, by John Lane, Lane and his friend, Venable are paddling to the sea going through the rivers of the Carolinas. An eleven day trip canoeing with his best friend. A particular place I saw an interest on is the Wood’s Ferry Campground. It is one of the six power dams of the Broad River. Wood’s Ferry encampment is just above Lockhart.
For the extra credit assignment, I decided to visit Cedar Key. I chose Cedar Key because it is the closest coastal town to Gainesville. During my visit to Cedar Key, I explored the charming city center. I also visited the state park which contained a museum and the Whitman home which allowed me to learn more about the history of Cedar Key.
The “hood” is often what downtown, Elizabeth NJ is labeled as. Children like me are doubted as many people seem to believe we will just become another statistic. My background has motivated to strive for success, proving those with agnosticism wrong. Seeing bodies strung out on the corner or laying on the sidewalk is a part of my everyday life. I’m not ashamed of where I come from as it has made me who I am today.
History of Waterways Wisconsin is home to many large bodies of water. It borders two great lakes: Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The western border is made up of both the St. Croix River and the Mississippi River. The treasured Wisconsin River runs through the state, and according to Sweeny-Justice (n.d.) the land has 15,074 lakes (only 40% are large enough to name).
It was a nice summer day,July, 2014. I woke up really early, around 6 a.m. My parents had to pick up my uncle and his girlfriend because they were coming with us. It was a long drive. The drive was about two hours.
My favorite places all have one thing in common, time seems to slow down when I’m there. One such place is Sebago Lake, specifically, during sunrise. Every year my family visits Sebago one week during summer, and on the second day, my dad and I wake early to put our boat in the water. On that morning I have to get dressed in the dark. I pad downstairs, grab a box of cereal, and hustle out to the truck where my dad waits, the boat trailer hooked to the back.
Now, the laid back southern life to me, is the way to go! No one is ever in a hurry it seems, just moseying along at their own tempo of life. Sitting back relaxing in the yard with family and friends talking about everything under the sky, laughing and cutting up with one another, having a cook-out or a late night bonfire enjoying the night air, sippin’ on some sweet tea, is what is special in my heart.
Since birth through the age of 15, my life has taken place in Jersey City, New Jersey. Born and raised only 9 blocks away from the hospital I was born in. My family moved to Georgia only 2 years ago, since then many things have changed in our lives. Most of my family still lives in New Jersey and New York so I often go back to visit them.
Counting down time packing up clothes in about ten minutes we would be going to Corpus Christi Texas. My sister and I were born. We lived there until I was a year old and until my sister was four. Then when we arrived we would go see my uncle Mike.
Me and my boys are finally leaving independence to alcove springs which is 166 miles away and will take us about 6 days. My luck is that the train in front of ours were a bunch of city people couldn't handle their animals so we had to sit there for about an hour then we finally went on our way then we noticed a problem there was too much weight so I looked inside the wagon and there was a big dresser in there with nothing in it so we had no choice to throw it out the dresser didn't really mean much but it was expensive
One summer day in Belle Plaine Wisconsin I was out on my dock fishing by myself for the first summer that I have been living in my new house. My sister came down and I asked her “do you want to fish with me.” She answered back immediately “yes,” and ran up the hill to go get her pole and was right back down having her pole bounce around in her hand.
The scent of saltwater lingered in the air, and the turquoise waters with the sun sparkling on the surface caught my eye. Beyond the sandy-pink beach small sailboats cut effortlessly through the waves as the gusty wind carried them. Our car gently coasted down the left side of the road through the rolling hills. Every once in awhile I would attain another peak at the precious blue Atlantic Ocean. My legs were relieved we had stopped, so they could stretch after the many hours of sitting.
I am from shops to busy streets and rocks on the beach And running memories of faded faces to looking in the ground for long lost faces I am from legos to teddy bears to hugging it at night when I cant sleep I am from dirt to catching baseballs and running bases I am from skateboards to swinging at the parks to sliding on the slides I am from signing songs to toasted marshmallows and staying up late to see the ball drop I am from laughing to crying to bad times to good And looking at the stars laying on the grass I am found in bunk beds on the top and hugging the pillows at night And dreaming of long lost faces that cant be found again I am from chocolate chip cookies to falling on my knees and getting bad bee stings
The sea I have always liked watching appa and his friends taking out the day’s catch from the net. It was something very exciting to me; there was always something new that I found. Either a fish that I had not seen before, or some interesting coral rock, or some drift wood. When I found a drift wood it always made me wonder about how it got here. From where did its journey begin?
