As we grow, learn, and develop, one example of a normative event is going to college. Students are encouraged by teachers to continue their education by attending college after high school to the point that its almost frowned upon if a student chooses not to. As an adolescent, already trying to figure out who they are and their role in the world, it must be overwhelming to have so many choices, paths, and decisions to make in hopes of doing what’s best for their future. During their college years, most students leave home for the first time to be responsible for making sure the bills are paid on time, their alarms are set, homework is done, and have the overall responsibility to make sure they’re doing everything they’re supposed to do. However, when the students self-reported how they felt, the mindfulness group stated feeling more dysphoria than the other two groups reported, even though the mindfulness meditation group showed much higher heart rate variability, which has been associated with increased mindfulness. The study suggests that this may be because mindfulness mediation encourages individuals to become more aware of their emotions, and how they are feeling. The discussion also expressed that the study lacked mindfulness measures, and had many technical problems including loose electrodes and failures to record, causing them to lose data. Another finding was that on the self-reported trait mindfulness only one facet, non-judging, in the ‘de-stress with dogs’ group differed from the rest. The study suggests that this could be a result of experiencing the dog’s non-judgment over time, making the students feel less
