The Cultural Revolution: Moying Li’s Evolution

Moying Li's life was upended by a cataclysmic event that altered her life and perspective of the world. She can no longer go back to the way things were; she is forever scarred. Moying Li takes us through her hectic life as she combats the challenges the cultural revolution has imposed on her. She recalls many influential moments and experiences in her memoir as she reflects on her coming of age during the Cultural Revolution. A variety of explicit phrases were used in Moying Li's memoir, Snow Falling in Spring, to express her coming of age and her transformation from a young, naive child into a complex, strong, and independent adult.

It demonstrates how far they've progressed from meek children to grown, audaciously courageous young adults. The Red Guard and their threats of reinforcements are a hindrance, but the fearless "warriors" are unafraid. They are determined, and they have put their lives in danger, as well as spit in the faces of the Red Guard and the government, in order to protect their father. Not only that, but the quote shows how mature and accustomed they are to these invasive, unnecessary accusations and condemnations. She had reached the realization that she now had to put childish prospects aside and do what was best for her and her family. She had to grow up so quickly because of the cultural revolution. She didn’t have time to fully enjoy her childhood and youth because of corruption, and she notices that, but she still takes life one step at a time. Moying was forced to assume the responsibilities of an adult before she was prepared, which equipped her for the weight of adulthood. They are in an English school learning to be teachers, and they are feeling bittersweet. This isn’t the career they might want to go into, but it’s for the benefit of their country, though they still have " ‘A wise friend once told me, if you must leave a place you’ve lived in and loved, where all your yesterdays are buried deep, leave it fast and don’t linger.’ There were certainly enough temptations for me to linger here; after all, I had lived most of my formative years at this school. But that world of yesterday, like my childhood, was gone. I had long ago stopped second-guessing the future, for fear it would turn out to be even more disappointing than all the broken dreams of my past. I tried to live each day as it came" (Li 127).
