All of us remember where we were on September 11th 2001. We remember the smoke and flames bellowing out of the towers and the pentagon building. We remember the heartbreaking images of the funerals that proceeded after of the countless lives lost. However we lost something else that day, we lost our sense of security and privacy and it did not come from terrorists in a faraway land, but from our very own government at home. The victims in this case is the entire population of the United States but more specifically Muslim Americans. Turn on the news or look across the internet, it is no secret that the media has portrayed Muslims as extremists, striking fear deeper into the heart of Americans. They acquire this information through wire taps, video surveillance, and monitoring online activity of each individual foreign or domestic that it sees as a “threat” Typically it is the men and women who are garnished in practicing Islamic clothing in airports, or gathering at a mosque to celebrate holy days or marriages. To many Americans, Islam is seen as a violent and uncompassionate religion. However it is the exact opposite; Muslims are peaceful and loving people, they are your neighbors, professors, fellow students, and every day Americans who share a love and passion for America just as much as we do. Like all religions, there is a small minority of extremists that create a stigma for the religion as a whole; and it is because of that, that Muslim Americans face scrutiny every day. It is because of this overbearing surveillance, that Muslim Americans live in fear and anxiety of always being monitored. They face scrutiny at their workplace, and hostility when expressing their religion and politics. In a society that guarantees freedom of expression, this should not be the case for any
