In an opinion piece published in the New York Times on June 24, 2016, Aziz Ansari shares his view on President Donald Trump’s hate speech and how that affects Muslim Americans. Aziz Ansari is the son of Muslim Immigrants and a comedic actor. “Why Trump Makes Me Scared For My Family”, was published about a week after the terrorist attack at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. This attack was noted as the deadliest terror attack since 9/11 and was carried out by Omar Mateen, a Muslim American. Because of this attack and President Donald Trump’s hate speech, Ansari felt the need to inform any non-Muslim American that being Muslim does not correlate to being a terrorist. After the 9/11 attacks, Ansari was walking back from class when somebody shouted at him, calling him a terrorist. Ansari goes on to say that when the attack was happening, he was just as much a victim as anyone else. He was in his dorm room, terrified of what was happening. Besides using his own stories, Ansari also relies on stories from others. As the son of Muslim Immigrants he has a front row seat to the fear. Apart from the fact that he is Muslim American and can directly relate to these issues, he offers more. Ansari is speaking from a personal and inside point of view. He describes how he actually “has it better than most” because of his “recognizability as an actor” (Ansari). This gives him even more credibility on the topic, because it shows that even though he is famous and well-known, people still link him to terrorism. It is unfair to link other ‘regular’ Muslim Americans as terrorists. In “Why Trump Makes Me Scared For My Family”, Aziz Ansari effectively informs his audience that being Muslim should not be linked to terrorism. He does this through his use of data, personal stories, and his credibility. Because he is Muslim American, Ansari is a credible source for this issue. Through not only his own, but others’ personal stories, Ansari appeals to emotion and strengthens his argument. Lastly, with the use of data he effectively informs the audience that Muslim Americans should not be considered
