Many people say that hardships are a part of life and that you need to fight through them to survive. Some of the hardships faced in this book are things like the weather, a tannery and several other things. Despite all of these hardships, though, the family in the novel never give up or break apart. This great example of what family's all across the world are doing and what we could take some notes from. In Nectar in a Sieve, Kamala Markandaya explores the impact outside influences have on Rukmani and her family to suggest that all families go through the hard times and that they just need to stick together to get through them.
One of the biggest influences on the family's life was the creation of the hospital and Kenny. They influenced their lives by making it so they could have children and also supplying Selvam with a job. “Come and see me,” he …show more content…

As it says “It rained so hard, so long and so incessantly that the thought of a period of no rain provoked a mild wonder” ( Markandaya 298 ).. This illustrates how much rain the farm actually got during this storm, the characters in the book had nothing left after this so they went hungry and poor until they were given food. It also stats in the book that “‘It is a bad season,” Nathan said sombrely. “The rains have destroyed much of our work; there will be little eating done this year.’” ( Markandaya ). This quote from Nathan is expressing how much sorrow he and his family are going to go through these up and coming months, with little food and a house that is falling apart there is little hope for family to prosper. Based on the quotation from the passages shown above it is clear that the weather had a major influence on what the family did after the rain and come and what they should have done
