Have you ever heard of the “Strange Fruit”? Did you know it is actually not a fruit? The negro spirituals is very important because it shows us the history Blacks went through and how is it compared today. In the novel, “To Kill A MockingBird” by Harper Lee, we go along with the Finch children as they realize that they are around people that are very racist. Negro spirituals were an internal part of history that inspired the novel “To Kill A MockingBird”. Through negro spirituals we learn about the early forms of music, the history and secrets of slaves, as well as how negro spirituals impacted today’s music.

To begin, negro spirituals origins actually came from slavery. The slaves made songs about how to escape from slavery and try to live their life as equals once they got out. During slavery, slaves couldn't really communicate to each other. So they sang songs to tell each other how to escape. Negro spirituals was actually formed from slavery. Since songs was basically the only way to communicate and about ways to escape. The slave masters thought they were singing because they loved the work. One song is well-known and it is called “Wade in the Water”. This is telling the slaves to get to the water for a better chance of escape. Slave masters still oblivious on what the slaves and what they are singing about, slaves still sang on how to escape. Some took the chance and succeeded while some was caught, beat, or killed. Slaves had a little bit of help. One of the songs was about Harriet Tubman. She was well-known and even had a bounty on her head.
