College campuses are excellent places to find examples of culture. Universities as a system are categorized into a certain culture but then within each facility there are different cultures that are unique to each community. Just like there are different types of universitys, there are different types of culture. Material culture includes all the art, architecture, technological artifacts, and material objects created by a society. So, for example, Ellis Library at Mizzou would be a part of the beautiful architecture that floods the streets on campus and would be categorized under material culture. Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group to another. Cultural integration is where a group with their own culture adapt the beliefs, practices, and rituals of another group without losing any of their original culture. Cultural lag refers to the idea that culture takes time to catch up with other things such as technology. For example, millennials are going to be better able to use smart phones than their parents. Gen X kids will have an easier time using new apple gadgets than the millennials. Cultural leveling is the “reduction of differences between cultures which results in a loss of uniqueness” (Powerpoint). The first of these is the dominant culture. The dominant culture is the one that is the most influential within a community. Usually there are multiple cultures present. Mizzou being a college campus would be the dominant culture. Next come subcultures which are smaller groups within the bigger one. A subculture is a culture within a broader mainstream culture, with its own separate values, practices, and beliefs. Being in a sorority or a club would make you a part of a subculture. Finally there are countercultures. These are cultures that function in opposition to the prevailing social norm. A social norm at Mizzou would be to go to class on time and finish all of your homework. Those groups of students who fail their classes because they don’t care and don’t go to class would be a part of a counterculture. Cultural diversity is how diverse the campus is, and from what ive heard their has been a negative response toward cultural diversity in the form of racism that has been growing as a shadow over mizzou the past few years.
