Most professional athletes will tell you that the competitive drive they have to win and be successful can be fierce. Besides the satisfaction and pride of personal accomplishment, athletes often chase dreams of standing on top of the podium singing their national anthem or getting a spot on a professional team also athletes face enormous pressure to excel in competition. They also know that winning can earn more than just a gold medal. In such an environment, the use of performance-enhancing drugs has become increasingly common. But using performance-enhancing drugs isn't without risks and after listening to this hopefully you decide that the benefits aren't worth the risks.

Besides making muscles bigger, anabolic steroids may help athletes recover from a hard workout more quickly by reducing the muscle damage that occurs during the session. This enables athletes to work out harder and more frequently without overtraining and reduces the risk of injuring themselves.

A very dangerous type of anabolic steroids are called designer drugs — these are synthetic steroids that have been illegally created to be undetectable by current drug tests used by sports drug testing agencies. They are made specifically for athletes and have no approved medical use. Because of this, they haven't been tested by the Food and Drug Administration and pose a very real health threat to athletes who consume them.
Many athletes take anabolic steroids at doses that are way higher than those prescribed by there doctors, and most of what is known about the drugs' effects on athletes comes from observing people that use them. It is impossible for scientists to create studies that would accurately test the effects of large doses of anabolic steroids on athletes, because giving athletes such high doses would be unethical and could be dangerous.
