Has people's use of Photoshop gone too far? Is altering photos to make people unrealistically skinny a good idea? For years, many photos in magazines, advertisements, etc. have been altered, making models and celebrities blemish free and thin. But in some cases of retouched photos the outcome can be horrific, making the person very unprofessional and disturbing. But making models thinner than they actually are can have bad effects on the public. Although many businesses may earn a lot of money from their photoshopped models or celebrities, they should put labels on their work, telling the public it’s been altered, and be aware of what their photos can do with young children's’ development and how it may cause eating disorders. In Europe, Valerie Boyer, a member of the French Parliament thought that warning labels should be put on advertisements, art photography, political campaigns, etc. that have been altered, say that it has been “Retouched photograph aimed at changing a person’s physical appearance.” And if they did not do that then they would have to pay 50% of the cost of the publicity campaign. Bur Boyer says he is not doing it to “damage creativity of photographers or publicity campaigns, but to advise the public on whether what they were seeing is real or not.” Many in France are trying to get the Photoshopped pictures to have labels saying they are altered, Lynne Featherstone, the equalities minister of Britain, says, “I am very keen that children and young women should be informed about airbrushing, so they don’t fall victim to looking at an image and thinking anyone can have a twelve-inch waist…” Not only in France, but everywhere people want designers to put these warning labels on their pictures to tell the public that that is not the real person’s body. Even though the fashion industry and other businesses could possibly lose money because their customers may dislike the labels, expecting only “perfect” people from their industry.
