Healthcare costs in the U.S. have gotten out of hand. The still-rising costs of getting care have caused many people to risk worsening conditions by putting off getting care and even some dying because they could no longer afford the necessary medication. If this trend continues no one except the rich will be able to afford getting basic care. But it is still possible to stop this trend and work to make the healthcare system available for all U.S. citizens. The cost of healthcare can be lowered by offering rebates or discounts for proactive people in managing their health, making universal healthcare a basic human right instead of a luxury, and setting standard prices for vital medications. Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer to this question there are a multitude of factors that are causing this issue. One aspect of this issue could be the lack of support from the U.S. government through the Medicare system a system that covers some of the cost for citizens in need. The system could help citizens pay for care but it is already being taken up by other costs, like “every day 10,000 baby boomers turn 65, triggering a population shift from private to public healthcare coverage placing an increased demand on the medicare system”(Lyford).
