In this dingy room stood a huge clock of ebony. The sound of the clock was extremely loud when it would ring every hour. It would distract everyone at the gathering and would silence all the guests. This clock symbolizes a reminder of death, which proves Prospero, who believes death is escapable, wrong. Nobody could stop the clock from making this loud noise, and they were horrified when it would pass an hour. “But when the echoes had fully ceased, a light laughter at once pervaded the assembly; the musicians looked at each other and smiled as if at their own nervousness and folly” Most of the guests avoided the dark room because of the clock and the gloomy atmosphere. He was a depressed soul, especially after losing all his loved ones one by one and also an alcoholic, who tried to drink his problems away. One of the similarities between the story “the Masque of the red death” and his life was the way he portrayed the disease “the red death” which seemed comparable to tuberculosis. For even his poems were written with thoughts of his experiences in the past, for example the poem “Alone”. He expressed the sorrow he felt when he was younger and separated from his mother, father and his siblings. He also implied that he saw the devil everywhere he would look, while others would just see the scenery. He believed that the demon was following him, because everyone he loved was taken away from him, which made him feel alone. Poe was a deep and unique writer, who was not paid as much as he deserved back then. His modern way of writing lead to so many types of stories we are familiar with nowadays. If only his audience had understood the value of his work and the stories behind it, Poe might have lived a better life and might have saved his wife
