Using both effective classroom environments and establishing firm classroom procedures, teachers are able to use diverse teaching styles to help all students learn at their own capacities. Teachers must be able to adapt to the learning of the students, changing the pace of the lesson or the lesson entirely to fit the needs of the students. To help the students in her class learn, Ms. Kennedy established a change in the plan of the day to make sure that students went over what was necessary to be learned for that day. When the students were able to get very ahead, they were allowed to read for their reading workshop, letting them continuous doing something that was productive throughout the entire class. The instruction type adapted and changed based on the lesson that was given. While reviewing the book and commenting on a prompt about the characters in The Outsiders, Miss Stein had the class get into small groups to work cooperatively through the prompt to come up with in-depth responses. When small groups were not used, the class as a whole would work through the assignments. For instance, Miss Stein would ask open-ended questions and look for student responses as a collective class. This adaptability in the forms of group instructions helped the students be able to have a changed pace in the class and communication on a small or large scale. The students were able to benefit the most by being able to learn with small instruction and cooperative learning as lessons sought fit. In race and socioeconomic standings, there was diversity within the classroom, having students come from all different backgrounds, home life, education, and biological experiences. Although these changes were apparent, all of the teachers tried to embrace these diversities while also not bringing attention to individual diversity. The students seemed aware of diversity, but the diversity appeared not make them treat each other any differently. Much like physical and economic diversity in the classroom, there was learning capacity disparity among the students as well. While students noticed the difference in their own ability levels compared to others’ in their class, most students overcame the differences or just worked silently alone on their project. In one instance, Miss Lindabury tried to encourage a male student to work with his partner when the male student kept trying to walk around instead of working. He eventually did settle down and tried his best to help his partner. While addressing diverse abilities and needs of her students, Mrs. Graham helped the students with their diverse needs by talking to them individually, offering assistance for when they needed it.
