Field Experience Assignment: Mrs. Davoren Classroom

For this field experience assignment, I observed a 4th grade teacher called Mrs. Davoren. Mrs. Davoren classroom consist of 30 students. Of those 30 students, five were ELLS and two had a disability. On this particular day, Mrs. Davoren was continuing a lesson regarding lines, line segment, and rays. She incorporated a variety of different activities and learning strategies to meet the needs of each of her students. By integrating different group configurations, in a unique way of pairing with grade level student with below and above average student with at grade level. Davoren utilizes curriculum mapping to prioritize her lesson. Curriculum mapping allows her to ask and answer thought and unclarified questions. As well as, repeats, identify and explain key concepts of the material. She prioritizes the lesson into three categories essentials, important and extra information. Each category is determined by the students. If students are having trouble understanding an essential topic. Mrs. Davoren would focus on that topic until the students grasp the concept. For example, an essential topic for students was to identify key vocabulary words such as line segments. An important topic was understanding how to illustrate it. Mrs. Davoren would not move on to illustrating the word until enough students understand what that word meant. The teacher accommodated individual expectations needs by having the class participate in activities such as, shoulder Buddy conversation. This is where students who have different skill levels explain to other students what line segments are. This helped out her lower-level and at grade level students. For disability students, she had the class use arm motions to demonstrate their vocabulary words. Mrs. Davoren never liked to single any student out so instead of labeling the differentiated student she had the entire class participate in the activity targeted towards those
