The following essay will inform and examine a video animation which demonstrates a teaching and learning activity, constructed to support each students’ development and cater to their individual needs. The teaching and learning design is called the Spider Web activity and is intended for students at the age of 7. It will be taking place in Dalby State Primary school’, which is located in the rural town of Dalby. Furthermore, the area of the school has a low socioeconomic status and the students consist of a diversity of ethnicities and cultures. Duchesne & McMaugh (2015) argue that as educators and carers are agents of socialisation, each child’s development is influenced to fit the particular culture and society in which they live (p.102). As a result, every classroom has a variety of students whose development has been influenced by differing sociocultural contexts. It is important for teachers to recognise and accept that sociocultural factors can influence how each student learns, thinks and behaves. For example, in an Australian classroom, a student from a different ethnicity may not be fluent in the English language. The student must address and overcome this sociocultural factor as it could slow down or complicate the student’s learning process. In regards to linguistically diverse students, schools could provide a translator or activity instructions could be written down in their first language. This not only accommodates for the sociocultural implications on their learning but encourages respect for their culture and its importance. In every classroom, there are several students who have disabilities or diversities which can affect their learning process (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2015). As teachers, it is important to establish an inclusive education and which accommodates the needs of such disabilities and provides additional support where needed without singling such students out in the class. The development of student with these diversities can be negatively impacted if their needs are not catered for or respected. In adjusting the learning activity, the teachers can address and accommodate for these disabilities, such as deaf and hearing impaired students. To create the least restrictive environment for such students, teachers can incorporate sign language to their teaching and write instructions on the classroom board. This will enable them to follow and complete the group task alongside other students. Through adjusting the learning strategy, diversities like disabilities can be supported and educators can acquire credibility in their teaching
