Each aspect of my lesson plan incorporates a relevant educational research based strategy for health education. I use three primary strategies within my lesson plan: graphic organizers, jigsaw cooperative groups, and project based multimedia learning. Each strategy is used in different sections of the lesson plan to build up to, and support the next. The research based strategy that I used for presentation procedures for new information was graphic organizers. The material I used for this lesson was from the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. I determined that in order for the students to read, process and organize this information effectively, they would need to learn how to use graphic organizers. Research shows that higher …show more content…
I determined that for these students to truly assimilate the multiple facets of these concepts, they would need to focus deeply on one piece at a time. Jigsaw cooperative grouping provided that opportunity. Each student must become an expert in one component of the lesson. They are responsible for gathering, organizing and transmitting the information on their topic, then they are responsible for teaching the other members of their group what they learned. If all group members do this, then they will all deeply understand the material. Research shows that jigsaw grouping works well by requiring individuals of different ability levels to be accountable and be involved in the peer teaching and peer learning (Macdonald, 2004). This strategy creates a need for students to depend on each other in positive ways to carry out the task. This strategy benefits special needs and accelerated learners with differentiated instruction. Accelerated learners can dig deeper into the material, focusing more on critical thinking skills and peer teaching. Special needs students can work collaboratively with peers and contribute meaningfully to the overall
