What are tonsils? The tonsils are tissue masses that are found at the point where the mouth and throat meet. There is one tonsil on each side of the throat. The tonsils are part of the human immune system. The immune system is what helps to fight off germs that can cause a variety of illnesses. They are there to process germs and help the body recognize different types of germs so that they can be fought off. Will my child 's immune system be weaker if the tonsils are removed? The immune system in the body has many parts and a variety of ways of recognizing germs that enter the body. Tonsils make up a tiny part of the immune system. For this reason, when children have their tonsils removed, they are usually not any more likely to get sick than kids who have their tonsils. Some children even experience fewer illnesses because of getting their tonsils removed. For example, they are less likely to have strep throat. To begin with, a child must undergo a physical examination by the family doctor or their pediatrician within at least seven days before the surgery. The purpose of the physical examination is to ensure the child is in good health. Medications that are used to treat fever and pain should be avoided at least three days before the procedure. Tylenol® (acetaminophen) is the only exception. After the procedure, Children’s Motrin® (ibuprofen) can be used to help reduce pain. Make sure that there are plenty of beverages and food items in your home that your child can snack on after the surgery. Some of these items would include smooth yogurt, pudding, apple juice, milkshakes, ice cream, Jell-O, and popsicles. A child should not eat anything before being given general anesthesia.
