Japan is still a male centered society. Not many females hold high ranking positions in companies. 41% of people who are working are females, but only 8.9% of them have management jobs; that is almost 40% difference compared to America, which has 46% management positions. Females used to be hired only for short term clerical work and for serving tea. “Self-Reliance”, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, shows that Transcendentalism philosophy, which puts individual thoughts over society’s ideas, will help Japan with the problem in gender equality. With Transcendentalist ideas, females will be able to voice their opinions easier in their workplace making the environment more female-friendly. In Japan, there are only 7.3% of politicians are females; in comparison, countries like Sweden have over 40% of politicians as females. This shows that even the political world is centered on males and their opinions. Women should have a more say in politics since half of the population is females and 7.3% does not show a equal representation compared to men. Many females "half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents" (Emerson 23). Society does not like people becoming unique and expressive of their feelings. Being different and unique defines them as they are but are usually denied by society. Females should not be scared of being unique as society calls it. They should express their own feelings even if that is considered wrong in society if they believe it is the right thing. Female politicians are usually stereotyped to have certain priorities such as issues regarding children and education. Just because the society expects to be that way does not mean, being that way is the right opinion. Adults should think the way children think because their "mind being whole, their eye is as yet unconquered, and when we look in their faces we are disconcerted" (Emerson 24). Children's minds are not affected by society, therefore they express their opinions and ask question regardless of what society will think.
