When Michael Met Mina and Freedom Stories both present the idea of fighting against injustice from a fictional and non-fictional standpoint. Discuss. Talia Ciardulli Everyone in the world has a different experience of life and some people chose to use their unique experiences to fight injustice and make other’s lives better. In the confronting documentary, Freedom Stories directed by Steve Thomas, we see the journeys different refugees have experienced on their road to freedom. Reyhana Akhy is an example of a women who has fought for her freedom and will keep on fighting for others. Michael has been brought up to believe the injustice in his country is against him. Michael is an echo of his parents. Aussie Values, Michael’s Dad’s organisation, wants to “turn back the boats.” They believe that they are suffering an injustice in Australia where they will be overrun with refugees taking their jobs and using their taxes for welfare. He does not believe in multiculturalism “it sends… [the wrong] message that all cultures are equal, so you don’t have to assimilate into our society”. Michael begins to question those beliefs when Mina asks him, how do you know if someone has assimilated, “how would you rate them?” Can you ever fit in with Australian society or are you always a refugee? Mina stands up for her opinions, why should she have to constantly try to fit in when others should just accept her background. Similarly, Reyhana uses her Facebook account to question people beliefs. At the end of the novel Michael realises that the injustice is not against him, but people like Mina. Michael fights this injustice by standing up for what is right. “Legally, we have to help these people.
