The role of women in a place such as India is drastically different from here in the United States. Whether discussing their role in everyday life such as: things around the house, education, and being in the work place or talking about the difference in culture, many aspects of their lives and women's lives here in America are not the same. Women of other countries, specifically India, are not blessed with the freedoms we have here in America. They do not have the freedom to do as they please in areas such as work, travel, and education. This argument with the differences in women's lives in America vs. India was brought about in a article recently published by the New York Times.₁ In the article, the readers discuss the many challenges women encounter daily as a result of them working, such as sexual harassment and gender discrimination. These women are frowned upon for wanting to work because it is the man of the houses job to bring in the money source, therefore these women are acclaimed to "not know their place." Sexual harassment is also the reason in which men don't want their wife's traveling to and from work, because if they have to travel long hours to work they will be home later than is deemed okay by the head of the household, their husband. Not only is it frowned upon that women travel but they normally work for a lesser wage than the men do. In India there is no minimum wage law other than that of the Minimum Wage Act of 1948, which states that the employee must be paid a "living wage." Stating that an employer must pay someone a level of income that ensures the basic standard of living. Therefore, the employer can set the minimum wage, whatever they see
