In colonial America, women were viewed as being weak, incompetent, and inferior to men. The women in the colonial period had no rights, but they had many responsibilities as the homemaker of the family. The women of colonial America were expected to serve, respect, and obey their husbands, due to the males being the head of the household. Modern America is very different than colonial America in many aspects for the women of America. Additionally, the women of America have undergone many significant changes to their roles as women including work, marriage, and childbirth. The women’s roles included cooking meals, tending the garden, and watching after the children. In addition to being a homemaker, the women sewed clothes and crafted home goods, so the men could trade or sell the items for profit. The women were required to stay in the home and tend to the needs of the husband, so he could provide income to the family. The women of the colonial period were servants to their husbands, in addition to being homemakers for the family. In modern America, the women are now allowed to leave the home for work. The women of modern America are allowed to participate in work, due to the development of many laws to protect women’s rights. For example, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 provided women the right to earn a livable wage. Additionally, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 had made it illegal to lower wages, due to the discrimination of sex. Although these laws were created, there are still wage gaps for women of color in modern America. The women of modern America commonly date people, until they find the man, or woman, that they would like to spend their life with. Additionally, women today are seen as equal to their husbands, so it is very common to see a male and female hyphenate their last names.
