When you think about World War 2, are you first thinking of women? Most likely not, however, women were very important in the victory of America. Men were sent out in thousands to fight for their country leaving their jobs behind. Most of these men were normal working men which left the women and other people with no economy. The government had to improvise, they did this by allowing women to take over men's jobs. Therefore, women had a huge impact on the economy and stability of the country during World War 2. To begin with, the stability of America in the start of the war was scary. The lack of men working depleted the amount of goods and funds coming into households. This forced the government to let women into the workforce to replace men for the time being. However, this caused many issues including business owners being sexist and equal pay being argued. During the beginning of the war women realized that they were greatly needed and started advertising the use of themselves in the war. This caught the attention of General George Marshall who supported the idea of a women’s branch in the army. This went to congress and later passed making the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps. The WACs served in more than 200 different non-combat jobs. This aided the war tremendously because it helped out the troops and allowed men to be in combat more. It wasn’t just on the field, women helped at home in the factories and many other jobs. However, these jobs weren’t very welcoming and it wasn’t from just the male bosses. Many white women discriminated against black and japanese women who tried to work in factories because of their ethnicity. As well as drama in the workplace their wages varied based on race.
