College sports are a lucrative business. March Madness, an end of season tournament for College Basketball, is televised for three weeks and was viewed by 10.7 million people in 2022. This is the reason that $3.1 billion was spent on sports betting in March and April of 2022. Yet up until the NCAA v Alston court case in 2021, not one off the participating players was getting paid for playing college basketball. Is this fair? If the winning teams are generating the fans and the T.V contracts, should these amateur players be compensated? They think it’s a good opportunity for them to earn money and prepare themselves for the pros. One reason is because these athletes “take great physical risks to play their sports and put their future earning potential at risk” (Maryville 10). They go to practices every day and travel across the United States to play a sport they love and they want to go pro someday. The idea of them getting paid motivates them to try harder in games. In fact, “College sports bring in tremendous amounts of money. Football, basketball, and baseball, in particular, generate billions of dollars a year for colleges in ticket sales, merchandise sales, and advertisements” (Drew 1). Because of how much money is being earned by a school, college athletes could earn some of this money. But, the school might use the money on other things such as campus needs. But, “ensuring that student-athletes are paid may not only alleviate the financial burden that some families face when sending their children to college. It may also encourage college athletes to stay for education before going pro” (Bouchrika 4). If these college athletes are being paid college benefits, they might want to stay at the college a full four years so they can graduate and this would have a big benefit for other schools.
