The ethical reasoning behind correctional officer’s critical-thinking skills would have to be asking themselves in a timely manner what is right and wrong and how they should go about different situations. Meaning that the correctional officers would need critical-thinking to determine if the inmate at the time was right or wrong. Ethical reasoning behind self-discipline would have to described as the correctional officer having full control of his or hers emotions when the inmates wants to be very disrespectful. Meaning that the officer would have to stay professional at all times and conduct themselves in a meaningful way. Situation: As a patrol officer, I am only doing my job when I stop a car for running a red light. Unfortunately, the driver of the car happens to be the mayor. I give her a ticket anyway, but the next morning I get a call into the captain’s office and told in no uncertain terms that I screwed up, for there is an informal policy extending “Courtesy” to city politicians. Several nights later, I observe the mayor’s car weaving erratically across lanes and speeding. What would you do?
However, both concepts might play a role in either situation. Some individuals question whether or not “ethics” should play a big part in law enforcement. Ethics should play a part in professional standards of conduct because it sets a standard for how individuals should behave. It is very important for police officers and any other individual in the law enforcement field to properly abide by ethical standards.
Ethics and the Evolution of Police Policing in this present day is defined as an individual or group of individual who prevent and detect crime within a community. Policing compares in many ways. They all attempt to provide services, keep the peace and reduce crime. Policing has evolved into something much more than what it used to be. Within this essay are the many different perspectives and how ethics were learned.
What does being ethical mean? Ethical basically means to do the right thing based on your morality. Ethics can be summed up as a standard of behavior. This means you must apply these standards of behavior to the way we live in both our personal and work lives. These standards of behaviors are set by government, professional bodies, organizations and community groups.
The ethical issues presented here is that the police know that they are not receiving adequate training to better train them when they go in the field, yet they are still allowed to confront situations where they are not equipped to deal with (Marion, 1998). This automatically puts the officer and individual in questions in jeopardy, and can amount to unwanted results. With the proper training and continuing education, the officers can be prepared to handle any situation, stressful or
reveals how many more stops and searches are conducted against racial minorities than would be the case if they were targeted at the same rate as white individuals. These tests were consistent and show that racial minorities would receive disproportionate police attention compared to the white individuals. Furthermore, included within this protection of human rights is the use police officer’s discretion to exercise force. Without a strong exercise of control over an officer’s use of force, citizens would be at the mercy of the police able to exercise extreme amounts of physical control over them with little, or no, provocation, or at a level that is not proportional to the situation at hand.

There are different situations that police offers are put in directly or indirectly that requires there sound judgment and training to kick in so they want fall in to police corruption. It is very important to make good ethical decisions because one unethical decision could ruin someones career. I learned that if criminal justice professionals will just stick to their ethical guidelines then their job would be more easy to handle. I believe that if criminal justice professionals approach situations the right way instead of the way that they want to then things would run a lot smoother when professionals come across situations where they have to handle a witness, an informant, a victim, or maybe even a criminal. I also learned that if a criminal justie professional makes unethical decisions then it could turn bad for the situation at hand. It is essential that criminal justice professionals make the best ethical decisions possible because it affects everyone in the situation.
Ethical Dilemma The term dilemma is defined as difficult problem or choice between equally alternatives while ethic is about positive not negative values. It must be choose one of that. In the situational, ethical dilemma faced in personal and societal relationship. As Enrich notes “ethic is about how we live our lives together in public sector institutions” (5).
While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. According to John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) capitalism is the astounding belief that the most wickedest of things for the greatest good of everyone. We can turn to Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), the Indian political spiritual leader, for insight into what capitalism really stands for. Gandhi said, “Capitalism as such is not evil; it is wrong use that is evil. Capitalism in some form or other will always be needed” in short, the way in which capitalism plays out in the real world of business largely depends on motivation of individual decision makers. So, we are back to the foundation issue of ethical behavior.
One of those most challenging areas I have experience during my current placement is ethical decision-making. We studied many possible scenarios during our Values, Ethics and Professional Issues class, and discussed the various types of decision-making models to help guide us when having to make difficult decisions. While the class was invaluable, because it helped me identify my own biases, and also shed light on how I have made decisions in the past and how I can possibly make decisions in the future, I knew that having to make real-life decisions would not be so cut and dry. When it comes to having and being able to maintain a strong moral code, front line patrol officers are the perfect example of what law enforcement requires. To ensure front line patrol officers maintain a strong moral code, they must be able to keep their integrity on and off duty. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them. Law enforcement requires not only physical strength within the policing work field but also strength within one’s values and their ethical as well as moral beliefs. ‘’Values is the term given to those ideas, behaviors, and actions that are important to us.
