The first instance I can think of when the subject of ethnocentrism is brought up about the US is how Americans generally belive that this is the greatest country in the world. We(Americans) tend to think that we are the best in everything just because we are American and if we lack in a certain area, we say that it was due to us not "caring." Another example of ethocentrism that is seen in the US is men not wanting women in certain areas of the work place, particularly where it is expected for men to work exclusively. Some American men, look at women more as subordinates instead of equals. My last example of ethnocentism is seen when in the low ranks of students in school.
The phrase “melting pot” was originally used in the 18th century to describe how people from varies of region gave up their original cultures, backgrounds or races and combined them into a common identity. In this essay, a closer look is taken to analyze if the different perspectives are taking effect positively or negatively. A melting pot is a way that the United States is typically referred to. The United States was perceived as an opportunity for a new life for many of the immigrants. Thus, the many reasons for their immigration was to flee from crop failures, lack of land or jobs, increasing taxes, and shortage of food (famine). Furthermore, many people left to the United States with the intention of having personal freedom and being free from being judged of their political or religious beliefs. As a result of the immigration, tension between nativists and immigrants grew. The nativists in America thought that the immigrants would ultimately affect the future generations of American born citizens.
I definitely believe that feelings of ethnocentricity and xenocenticity are more prevalent in U.S. culture. Just from the definitions of ethnocentrism and xenocentrism I can see relevance to U.S. culture and make connections as to reasons why. I believe the U.S. adapts many cultures, but still finds ways to assess other cultures in comparison to our own. I believe we fall short in the ability to evaluate a culture by its own standards. This creates an issue because individuals are constantly clouded by their own norms that it becomes difficult to view any values or beliefs with an open mind.

These prejudices that “white” people carry leads to discrimination against people of color. During the lecture, Dr. Jendian explained about ethnocentrism as well. The definition that he provided states that we judge others using our culture’s values, beliefs, and practices. Therefore, we believe the way of doing things is superior, so other people’s ways are inferior. For example, the professor explained that one day he went to a Oaxacan restaurant and that he ate crickets.
Ethnocentrism and its prevalence in U.S culture Ethnocentrism is judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one’s own culture. Individuals who are ethnocentric judge other groups in relation to their own ethnic group or culture. I think The United States likes to refer to themselves as the “big mixing pot” of cultures. I would agree, we do have a wide range of different cultures, but that does not mean that we do not “evaluate and judge other cultures based on how they compare to our own cultural norms.” I think us as Americans feel this way, because we are too scared to change what we have learned and known since birth.
