Ethos is the credibility of someone and pathos is the use of emotions to persuade. Ethos and pathos are important when reading, writing, or speaking . Both are important in different ways. Ethos shows the credibility of person making someone more likely to believe in their claims. While pathos will use certain emotions that will make the audience more susceptible to being persuaded. Ethos is a major part of making what you read or write appear more credible and believable through using their credentials or past experiences to do this. Such as a nutritionist could use her credentials to sway the audience to believe what she thinks is a healthy diet. Another example could be someone who was homeless at one point could use that past experience when trying to sway the listener that being homeless is dangerous. Or a social worker could explain the faults in the foster care system using her past experiences and credentials to make her claims appear true and persuade the audience. Pathos is also significant when trying to persuade someone of your postulation. The use of emotions can persuade someone to your belief. There is a vast amount of emotions that can be used such as joy, empathy, melancholy, and such. But it's important to use pathos in the correct way.
