One would think that the most passionate writers were constantly surrounded by massive piles of books. That's the only way to get them passionate about reading. However this Eudora Welty was not one of these writers. In One Writer’s Beginnings Eudora Welty through the use of frantic imagery, intimidating connotative diction, and apposition is able to effectively portray her purpose of writing, that being the influence literature has made on her life.

Welty utilizes frantic imagery that effectively demonstrates the excitement she had as a child for reading. When Welty finally obtains the permission to receive any book in the library -- with one exception -- she begins to read them as fast as humanly possible : “So two by two, I read library …show more content…

The gatekeeper of the books was a frightening woman who keep constant watch with her “dragon eye”. The idea of a dragon eyes has a connotation of an evil all knowing presence, that wants to protect whatever they have. This characterizes Mrs. Calloway an intimidating evil figure in Welty’s childhood. By giving Mrs.Calloway this all knowing presence it only limits Eudora’s access to books. The the limitation of products the more valuable they become. Therefore when Eudora finally does get access to higher level books she treats them as she would worship a king, fanaticism. When further describing the librarian, Welty describes the aural tone of her voice as “normally commanding”. The connotation of commanding gives off that she is confident as well as stubborn. Hence, this “creature” not only looks frightening, but sounds intimidating as well. Further giving a sense that Mrs. Calloway is an autocratic ruler of the library. Thus - ironically - by impeding Welty’s reading capabilities, Mrs. Calloway only incentivized the allure of books.
