Pericles (495 BC-429 BC) was an Athenian statesman and strategos during the “Golden Age” of Athens. His father Xanthippus fought in the Persian wars and his mother Agariste belonged to the powerful Alcmaeonid family, so he was brought up with considerable wealth and power. Pericles placed much value into philosophy and the arts as a result and was even personal friends with famous philosophers such as Anaxagoras and Zeno.
Dionysus is the Greek god of wine, celebrations, ecstasy, and of the art of theater. He is included in the 12 Greek god Pantheon and he is residing at mount Olympus. Symbols include the grapevine, cup, tiger, panther, dolphin, and goat. He is often considered as one of the youngest Olympian gods.
Dionysus was the greek god of wine, theatre, fertility and celebrations. His father was Zeus, god of the sky and all olympians, and his mother was the princess of Theban, Semele. She was a mortal, making Dionysus the only god born of a mortal parent. Before he was born Semele was tricked by Zeus jealous ex wife, Hera, to have Zeus swear on the river styx to make a promise to Semele. Semele asked to see Zeus in his true form, though Zeus already knew what she would ask of him.
Hesiod and Euripides argue that people worship the gods so that they avoid punishment; however, Hesiod argues that the gods are worth worshipping because they also give good Strife to promote productivity, while Euripides argues that blind faith is ludicrous because it prevents people from developing their own moral compass. Hesiod uses Works and Days to illustrate how the gods marked out meaningful tasks for humans, so that humans could always be preoccupied with something productive. According to Hesiod, this makes the gods worth worshipping, because the gods demonstrate how they have humans in their best interests through giving them good Strife, which makes people more productive within their community. In contrast, Euripides uses Orestes
Dionysus, god of nature, saw that man was dying from the winter wind. He came up with a way to protect man from this. He went through many materials that could possibly warm up humans. After multiple trials and errors, he finally came across sheep’s wool, which would change humans' lives forever. Dionysus needed to find some way to convert the sheep’s wool into something that would fit man, so Dionysus spent many days in Olympus when he suddenly decided to structure the wool based off of man’s body.
HUM2225 Dr. Hotchkiss September 30, 2016 Moral Insight Plato’s Euthyphro is based on a lesson between Socrates and Euthyphro outside of the Athenian court about the definition of pious or impious. Euthyphro was surprised to see Socrates there and even more curious to find out why he was there. Socrates explained that the court was persecuting him for impiety because Meletus was spreading rumors about him corrupting the Athenian youth. Euthyphro explains to Socrates that he was there to prosecute his father for murdering a farm worker named Dionysus.
Dionysiac values are vindicated by the illumination of the consequence of a mortal acting so impiously towards this god: a gruesome, violent death. Dionysus is more powerful than Pentheus, something the mortal does not reconcile, and he pays the price for this irreverence towards Dionysus. The people of Thebes do not understand than Dionysus is a god and does not abide by Earthly concepts of justice and fairness. The violent conclusion also serves as a means for Dionysus to exact revenge on the non-believers of Thebes in that if Pentheus hadn’t been excessive in his hatred for the Bacchae, and had joined Tiresias and Cadmus in their worship of Dionysus, he would have evaded a terrible amount of suffering.
The period between 500 B.C.E to 338 B.C.E is referred to as “Classical Greece” due to the many achievements taken place, as well as the blossoming democracy in Athens, under the leadership of Pericles. One of the major confrontations during this period was between the Greek states and the Persian Empire. By the beginning of the 5th century BCE, Persia conquered Ionia, Thrace, and Macedonia while under the rule of Darius, and continued to expand his empire westward into mainland Europe.
Sophocles was one of three greatest writers of Greek tragedy. He lived his entire life in Athens. In school, Sophocles studied theatre arts. Sophocles gave up performing because of his relatively weak voice. He also wrote one hundred and twenty-three plays and only 24 won first place, the rest won second.
Growing up is one thing in life that you don’t notice about yourself. In the book I’m reading To Kill A Mockingbird a main character Jem Finch matures he doesn’t notice, but his family does. Jem goes from trying to get Aurthur out of his house to realizing maybe Aurthur probably wants to stay inside his house. The protagonist Jem Finch changes throughout the novel by planning ways to get Aurthur out of his house, to telling Attictus that Dill had ran away from home, and realizing maybe Aurthur does want to stay in his house.
Reading Euripides’ text Iphigenia at Aulis, it is evident that the story is part of a play and these are the words of a messenger who is telling his story to Clytemnestra. We know this because in the last portion of his statement he tells us that he was sent by Agamemnon and he employs the words ‘your daughter’ (Euripides, 2011). He recounts his story as someone who witnessed the sacrifice of Iphigenia first hand. He also assured Clytemnestra that he was there and that her daughter has been ‘flown away to the gods (Euripides, 2011). With this account being part of a play, one can read that there has been some drama added to the wording, Euripides is painting a dramatic picture for the listener to imagine the scene.
Can the murderess, Medea, be justified for the killing of her own offspring? Medea is a play written by Euripides in the year 431 B.C. and basically is a tragic Greek mythological play that deals with themes such as love, marriage, betrayal and revenge. Summing it up, this play specifically is about how Medea is sent into exile due to Creon (the king) feeling threatened by her. He is feeling threatened by her because Jason (Medea’s husband) took another bride to bed which happened to be the king’s daughter.
Sophocles had an enormous impact on Greek theater due to three theatrical innovations he made: the addition of a third actor, ending the custom of presenting tragedies as linked trilogies, and the increase of the chorus from twelve to fifteen. The three greatest classical tragedians are Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides, but Sophocles is known as the greatest dramatist in Western literature. Due to innovations he made to Greek theater and the plays he wrote, Sophocles is a more successful dramatist than Aeschylus and Euripides. He wrote 123 plays during his lifetime and of those, seven survive to this day. Oedipus the King is one of the most ironic plays ever written. Sophocles, the author, is a famous philosopher of the ancient times The Play is about Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who kills his father and marries his mother. An oracle warned Laius, the king of Thebes prior to Oedipus, that his son would murder him. Accordingly, when his wife, Jocasta, had a son, he exposed the baby by first pinning his ankles together. The infant, who was adopted by King Polybus of Corinth and his wife was then brought up as their very own.
