1519 Alvarez de Pineda was the leader of the exploration to the Gulf of Mexico. He was the first European explorer to see and map the Texas coastline. However, Pineda did not explore the Texas land. 1528 Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca was the first European to actually explore the Texas land.
Lorenzo De Zavala had the greatest impact in forging the identity of Texas, because he was the republic's first Vice President, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, and helped write the Texas Constitution. Furthermore, by signing the declaration of Independence Zavala helped create an idea in Texas of supporting what you believe in and focusing on freedom. Addition, he helped mold the culture in Texas of standing up for your beliefs, because he was originally born in Mexico but moved to Texas and supported their independence even signing the declaration. Everything changed when the Spanish began to explore and establish colonies throughout Mesoamerica and South America. Cabeza de Vaca was shipwrecked in 1528, and wandered through the area in the 1530’s. another Spanish explorer De Soto died before he was able to reach what is known today as Texas. De Soto’s men continued west crossing the Red River in 1542. Later after that the number of Spaniards moving into the region increased and the first settlement in Texas was established in 1682.
One of the lasting impact the Spanish settlements had; the settlers created a bad relationship with the natives. The natives had several purposes to contemn the settlers. One reason being, in document c, that it states that the natives inculpated the settlers, or more specifically priests, for transporting disease from Spain to the native’s motherland. Corresponding to the natives, the settlers also have their motives for resenting the natives. For instance, the Apache and Comanches tribes had slaughtered several innocent settlers and soldiers, as well as raiding a couple of missions around San Antonio and La Bahia (doc b).

Many Americans believed that Texas should belong to the U.S. According to the Manifest Destiny, they believed the U.S should extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and that any Mexicans or Indians they encountered should be kicked out.
European colonization in Texas started in 1689. It was ordered by St. Francis in order for Spain to spread Christianity, Spanish culture and also to establish control. This era began with missions and presidios. They were protected using presidios. A presidio was originally built for protecting travel on railways but later used for protecting Spanish missions and settlements.

This new territory was inhabited by several different European peoples including the Spanish Empire in Hispaniola and English immigrants at Chesapeake Bay, their roles in slavery differed in terms of who they acquired to work and the type of work they assigned to their help. In the 1500’s, the Spanish people had several sugar mills in the Caribbean land they named Hispaniola. Because of diseases brought over by the Spanish people, the indigenous population of this land was wiping out and therefor they needed to bring over more people to work for them.

In 1494, the Treaty of Tordesillas was established in order to evenly divide unclaimed lands between Portugal and Spain. This led to the Line of Demarcation, in which the non-European world was divided into two zones. Portugal had rights to the eastern hemisphere, and Spain had rights to the western hemisphere.
