The Portuguese Empire Started in 1415 when the Portuguese soldiers captured Ceuta. The four other major Colonizes at this time that were continuously spreading was the Dutch, the British, the Spanish, and the French. Portugal colonized in Brazil, Africa, and India, they also attempted to colonize in North America but failed. The Portuguese were effective in colonizing in the Atlantic world because they constantly gained more land and they governed it for many years.
Many countries attempted to start colonies after the New World was discovered. During the late 1500’s England attempted to settle a permanent colony in present day North Carolina. Their purpose for sailing over to the New World was to interfere the shipping for Spain. With a blessing from Queen Elizabeth of England, Sir Walter Raleigh set off to the New World with the help of Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe in command of the ships. The first of the Roanoke Voyages came in 1584.
When more and more people came from different countries to collect the riches that Columbus had found, neighboring countries felt the urge to send residents on a permanent voyage to discover the riches like Christopher Columbus had done. It wasn’t just two or three countries who followed this mechanism either In the French colonial regions, they were focused on trade, specifically of fur with the natives. While the French were focused on trade, a large portion of their income came from fish. Along with that, farming developed, mainly to provide support.
The three primary types of colonists who came to the New World were the adventurers, missionaries, and the colonists. They came for two primary reasons: financial and missionary. Christopher Columbus was attempting to find a financial route to Asia when he finally landed in America. Missionaries aimed at spreading Christianity to the American Indians. Historians have referred to this as a quest for God and gold.
French Exploration in the New World French Exploration began about forty years after Columbus sailed to the new world. They hoped to find a passageway that would get them to the east to trade, through America, Along with spreading Christianity with the natives and claiming land. The French found that Furs were a large thing on the trade market. So fur trading became a huge part in French History in America.
Colonist had their reasons for coming over to the New World. For many it was for economic growth, religious freedoms, or escaping the political and social systems of their native lands. They enjoyed their freedoms and liberties as new societies while being developed, but it was not an easy accomplishment. The colonist worked hard on developing their towns on their beliefs and values far from the reach of England. As time went on, there was growing tension between the thirteen American colonies and England, their motherland.
God, glory, and gold were the three main factors that brought settlers into the New World. God, was primarily what led the settlers into the New World, because freedom of religion was important to settlers during the colonization stage. The desire to spread and expand religion was highly important for settlers. Over the years the influence of religion was emerged within more elaborate aspects. These aspects have being politics, economy, and society.
The Dutch grabbed rich territories in Asia to gain control over the profitable spice trade. They also set up colonies in South Africa and North America. The French acquired colonies too, including present day Canada, which was particularly valuable for it’s fur. The British in the 1600’s took over the Dutch territory in North America and in 1763 they took Canada from the French. Despite their loss of the 13 American colonies after the Revolutionary War in 1783, the British continued to acquire new territories.

In 1492, European explorers landed on what to them was an unknown place, and called it the New World. North America was seen as an entirely new land with much to discover like gold. These explorers also discovered new people in this New World with different lifestyles than the Europeans which they have never seen before and languages which they have never heard before.
As the world of global exploration and colonization grew, many powerful European empires set out to see what the New World had in store for them. Each empire had their own individual agendas and incentives for colonization. This led to the many differences between methods of colonization and exploration in every colony and region. The Atlantic World portrayed these contrasts between the Spanish, French, Dutch and British empires. However, the British settlements along the Eastern seaboard differed the most from those of other empires because there were no established policies or methods in British colonization, which led to differences in the economics and culture of each colony depending on who settled it.
Another key factor Nathaniel Hawthorne uses to criticize the human nature and hypocrisy of all people is the community of Salem, as a whole.
