DBQ European Exploration From 1400 to 1700 C.E. the Europeans began explorations into the new world and made settlements in the Americas. The explorers included Columbus, Magellan, and Cortez, and they are known in this era also known as the Age of Exploration. One of the European countries to first explore was Spain; however, the Spanish were not, one would say, good house guests. The Spanish saw the natives as inferior and In need of Christianity. The settlers mistreated the natives even though the laws back in Spain declared justice in dealing with the natives.
Document 7 mentions that Europe had to compete with it’s neighbors when voyaging across the globe, and even before they started to expand. This could have motivated European countries to explore faster and beat out other countries. As a whole, Europe had a desire for power, which it could gain by exploring (Document 7). When the Spanish came to Mexico and South America, they spread smallpox. This lead to the death of Huanya Capac, the Incan leader, which in turn set of many wars of succession.
When you think about who discovered the New World you most likely think Christopher Columbus. There is a huge controversy on who truly discovered the New World. Columbus didn’t actually mean to discover the New World, he was trying to avoid blocks so he went the other way and found the New World. A place where the Europeans have never seen. However if Columbus did he led Europe into the Age of Exploration.
The Corps of Discovery was a group of the United States' army that was specifically opted for exploration. The leaders of this branch consisted of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Thomas Jefferson started this association with aim to receive knowledge of the newly purchased Louisiana Purchase and establish relationships with the Native Americans of the region. The president also wanted to start stacking U.S presence in the Northwest and Oregon territory. The party of 45 men set out on May 14th, 1804 after Lewis and Clark had separated to gather supplies and train the participates.
Trade routes were one of the most important characteristics of the global economic system. During this period, there were several trade routes that resulted in the discovery of new lands. The Age of Exploration was a time of great expansion in the European Countries. From Africa, to North and South America, the Spanish, Dutch, English and French were all competing to find new trade routes, new commodities, and new areas to convert to their religion. The Age of Exploration had a tremendous impact on Europe, the Americas, and Africa. On one hand, Europe was able to expand widely across the world spreading their culture. On the other hand, the Americas were discovered and had their original culture changed immensely.
By the end of the 1400s, many European ships left Europe to explore the world. This exploration could have been initiated by various events that occurred previously. Starting with the first event, the Black Death, in the 1300s, which caused the decline of the feudal system and lead to the rise of the Renaissance era, a period of time when people were craving for more knowledge in topics such as philosophy, anatomy, geography, etc. It was throughout this Renaissance period and because of new inventions such as the printing press that could have caused people to want to explore and expand their knowledge about the geography of the earth. Age of Exploration During the Age of Exploration, trade was very important because it caused the triangular trade. The continent Europe (mainly the countries Spain and Portugal) changed the economy of Europe in the Age of Exploration. Spain changed the economy when Christopher Columbus was set to find Asia going west of the Atlantic. Instead of finding Asia, Columbus found a new land, known as the United States of America.
The New World did not rely on animals as heavily. They had llamas, which could not become beasts of burden. However, Europeans introduced animals such as cattle, donkeys, chickens and horses to the land. These animals could be used for carrying loads as well as food. Because these animals were introduced to the New World, we have formulated advanced agricultural techniques to raise them for food.
Believe it or not, one of the things with the biggest impact was earthworms, the worms altered the whole ecosystem as we know it today. Not only did the Europeans bring many things over seas to the New World, they also took many things out of the New World. The taking of the resources and bringing things to the New World is often referred to as the “Columbian Exchange”. Not only did he bring and take, columbus used the fertile land of the New World in order to grow things in mass quantities in order to profit off of it. Some examples this is tobacco.
The Spanish brought many new things back to the old world from the new world. Gold and silver were brought to Europe from the Americas as well. This groundbreaking discovery introduced a brand new land that offered many amazing materials and crops that would change history forever. New animals such as horses, sheep, and cattle altered the Native Americans way of life to have a more nomadic approach and the introduction of brand new crops from the Americas changed the European diet.
