ASAM 100 has been one of the most insightful classes I have taken in college—so far! Through this class, I was able to learn a great deal about my culture and about myself as a person. In retrospect to my first “Why ASAM?” essay, I still believe that it is important for everybody to learn about their culture sometime throughout their life. I was able to learn about various topics such as: the issues of my culture, the traditions of my culture, how others view individuals of my culture, and more. Throughout this class, I learned about the Model Minority Myth and its effect on individuals of Asian background, I learned about issues that other Asian Americans faced through the video, Asian American Voices, and I learned to grow as a writer.
Purpose and Goals Statement The Ohio State University Graduate College of Nursing Christina M Sanchez As a little girl, all of my art projects and writing assignments were full of ambitious promises to cure the sick of all their ailments. Watching my mother care for my ill grandmother, who lived with us when I was young, ignited my passion to help those in need. It then became my fierce determination to make an immediate difference in the quality of life for others.
I would have the opportunity, not only to shape my own education, but to have the chance to improve the medical school system. It also allows for modernization in teaching methods, such as simulation-based training. I already tend to use hands-on and visual learning methods in studying and so this would help me immensely in succeeding while enjoying the material being taught. We did a lot of simulation-based learning in my EMR class and it was my favorite part of the course. I was also attracted by the WMed approach to teaching through teamwork.
Through this program I hope to learn the fundamentals of community based research, how to advocate for health policy, a most importantly how to educate communities on health. I believe that is the most rewarding thing I can get out of this program. Having the ability, the power, to change someone’s life, by just giving him or her basic health care knowledge is so empowering. Knowing that I changed that life, that because of me hopefully their health will better instead of worsen. Through this program I hope to learn from the community, to learn their experiences, which will allow me to be even more conscious of the disparities they are forced to face, hence causing me to ponder “how can this issue be fixed?”, “what policy can be implemented”?.
Three surgeries to fix the structure of my hips, and months of life-threatening complications later, the memories are coming back in pieces. I remember the post-seizure fatigue that swept over me as a result of the drugs being pumped into my system. I remember the little girl whom I shared a room with and her plaid comforter that practically engulfed the entire hospital bed. However, most prominently, I remember the half smiles, the quickly wiped tears, and the exhausted sunken eyes of my mother.
I watched the video again and recorded myself. When I finished, I felt I did better applying the two aspects; understanding the source material, and sounding more confident. I noticed I was familiar with the material because I had seen the material two times prior to recording it again. This helped me to predict the order of events which influenced my description of the film better. As Gile talks about how extra linguistic knowledge (ELK) helps the interpreter in comprehending and deliver the message more accurately.
As I reflect on the MSW program at Sacramento State University, I am grateful for the experiences I was able to receive during my field work during both years in my MSW program. I am grateful for choosing a program that includes internship as part of the requirement. I truly believe that the field work we have been provided with has given us the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and learn what being a social worker really means. The most challenging thing for me during the MSW program was starting my second year placement. It was my first time working in a medical environment and I did not know what to expect.

The Process of Reflection The process of reflection is central to clinical supervision. Launer (2003) describes external and internal factors in supervision whereby clinical practice and sharing skills are external and reflection is an ‘internal conversation.’ Brunero & Stein-Parbury (2008) discussed the effects of clinical supervision in nursing staff and argued that self-reflection generates a sense of self-awareness and knowledge to the individual. Supervisees or students may be asked what happened during a clinical event, how they felt, the implications of their actions and what they would do differently if faced with the same situation.
I strongly believe I am an excellent candidate for your program because I am focused, hard-working and passionate about offering help to communities. I also have good insight into the economic and infrastructural processes required to accomplish sustainable change in preventive medicine and generally in the healthcare sector of my country. This has helped her overcome so much heartbreak, from losing my dad, my sister, and my brother to her own health issues and through it all her faith has never been shaken. I look at my mother with nothing less than amazement. After my dad had his heart attack and could no longer work my mom never failed to provide for all her children, we didn't have a lot but we always had enough. This made me such a humble and grateful person, and I never take anything I have for granted.
Like most mothers, my mom goes through a lot in one day, especially with three kids. Sometimes, I do not know how she pulls it off. I think my mom got most of the strength she has today from what she went through as a teenager. When my mom was 17 years old, her father passed away from an open heart surgery. Having someone close to you, especially your father or mother, pass away is very devastating.
