We, as a species, are constantly changing. Through time and experience, our bodies have learned how to evolve in order to fit the needs that we require. Whether the change occurs through a physical evolution of our entire species or through something as simple as a college student learning a new writing technique, we are constantly learning and changing to adapt to the situation at hand. Research into the human experience adds to our overall knowledge and understanding of the world. We learn about the values of different cultures, about what goes into making a masterful piece of art, and overall about how history is made. The efforts of humanitarian scholars give us the ability to understand the world we live in and give us the tools to imagine the future. The evolution of man is one of the most complex studies that we can possibly imagine. From the speculations that have to be made, from before history was recorded, to the highly complex species that we are today, there are so many elements that pertain to such a highly intriguing area of study. As previously stated, these two shared a bond like no other. With the curse that was placed on Enkidu, Gilgamesh immediately becomes worried, and as the dreadful curse consumes Enkidu, we watch as Gilgamesh slowly breaks down. With the death of Enkidu, comes Gilgamesh going on another journey. He exchanges his kingly garments for animals skins as his way of showing that he is in mourning for Enkidu and he sets off into the wilderness, intent on finding Utnapishtim. Gilgamesh hopes to find this man of legend and discover the secret to immortality. On his journey, Gilgamesh continues to realize how fearful of dying he truly is. This is the moment that we realize, Gilgamesh is just like any other man, he fears something, he fears death. This fear makes him understand that he is still human, even though he has the blood of the gods in him, he will still die like anyone else unless he finds a solution. When Gilgamesh arrives at his intended location, he begs Utnapishtim to tell him the secret of immortality. It is at this point, that Utnapishtim gives him a test. “If you think you can stay alive for eternity,” he says, “surely you can stay awake for a week.” Gilgamesh tries and immediately fails. He returns home, finally accepting his fate of death and realisation that he is not completely
