How can challenges change people throughout their lives? Challenges shape people in many different ways, whether it be for good or bad. The effects of these challenges make people who we are, and shapes the characters found in stories and novels. The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor showcases change in characters through Alyss Heart, a young princess in Wonderland. Beddor uses these conflicts to convey how Alyss changes as a character throughout the novel.
Where we’re from, who we know, and how our mental makeup is, is very important in our lives. It can be the deciding factor between life in prison and a life dedicated to giving back to others. In The Other Wes Moore, The lives of two young men are examined through three distinct lenses, how the role our environment, social capital (How we get ahead by helping each other) and how our mindset can dictate who we become later on in life. Only through his many trials and beatings does John Grady begin to accept the world for what it is, a place that does not contain only pretty horses; however, he still manages to remain true to himself and what he believes in. Lupe Medrano a shy girl who was bad at sports, wanted to be the marble champ. Lupe is the main character in the story “The Marble Champ” by Gary Soto and she is a great role model and that can be hard because not everyone is a role model. She is a role model because she is hardworking, a good sport, and she is very intelligent. The first and one of the best reasons that Lupe is a role model is because she is a hard worker. For example Lupe was determined to win the marble tournament.

Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak is an interesting children’s picture book. The main character is a little boy named Max, who has a wild imagination. He uses all five senses as well as thought and his actions to express his personality as well as how he reacts and interacts with his surroundings. Max’s id, ego and super-ego are greatly shown in this book through the way that the author has portrayed him. Not only is this book a children’s story, but it can also be perceived as a life lesson.

Throughout Maya Angelou’s autobiographical series, we get to know a lot about the relationships she gets involved in throughout her life. As the reader, some of her relationships made you want to yell at your book, but in some cases, you rooted for the both of them because you hoped she would find love. Over the course of the books, you learn why her relationships failed and how they influenced her and her decisions later on in life. Although you learn early on how independent Maya is, you see her with a variety of men in her life: some for pleasure and others who she really cared for. For example, Maya’s marriage with Tosh was something she didn’t expect to happen or was necessarily looking for, but this failed relationship made a crucial impact on her which led her to the successful life she had later on.
