Throughout this entire time Maya is very anxiously attempting to not make a mistake, but she refuses to give up, to ‘back down.’ In the Johnny Cash version of the song “I Won’t Back Down,” he says “gonna stand my ground”, like how Maya wouldn’t stop the car and wake her father up, why, only she knows. “You can stand me up at the gates of hell,” is what the second line states.
