Annotated Bibliography of Two Sources

Elpus and Abril (2011) set out to complete a demographic profile of music participation at the high school level in the United States. They were examining the data from this quantitative study to establish how students from various races, genders, and socio-economic statuses were represented in the high school music programs. A main theme established by this study is that music programs are consisting mainly of Caucasian female students of higher socio-economic status; therefore, music research involving academic performance and music may not be accurate if not considering the students represented.

The data shows that the Hispanic population is under-represented in music programs (Elpus & Abril, 2011); therefore, perhaps if it is shown that attendance of Hispanic students in music programs is higher, we can examine ways to involve more Hispanic students in music. This article is valuable as it lays out facts regarding race and music and shows the need for music educators to examine their programs. Why are Hispanic students not represented?
