Denzel developed Ethos in his speech, “Fall Forward”, by including times he failed and times other celebrities failed, but still kept trying. One example of Ethos being used in, “Fall Forward” is, “Reggie Jackson struck out 2,600 times in his career, the most in the history of baseball, but you don't hear about the strikeouts. People remember the home runs. Fall Forward”. Denzel uses Reggie Jackson as an example since many people see him and other celebrities as “perfect”. By knowing that celebrities also fail, these graduating college students can feel encouraged to keep going when times get difficult just like their role models do. Another example of Ethos being used in, “Fall Forward” is, “I didn't get the job. But here's the thing. I didn't quit. I didn't fall back. I walked out of there to prepare for the next audition and the next audition and the next audition.” Denzel mentions the time he failed in the acting business but “didn’t fall back” in order to make the graduating college students feel motivated to keep on going when they face difficulties in life. One example of Pathos in, “Fall Forward” is, “Every graduate here today has the training and the talent to succeed”. When Denzel says this he is inspiring the audience to succeed by having hope in them. This also causes the graduating college students to have hope and faith in themselves. Another example is, “How many ghosts are going to be around your bed when your time comes?” This could be used to encourage these college graduates to do whatever they can to accomplish their goals, so they don’t have any regrets in life when their time comes. Both of these examples show how Denzel developed Pathos in his speech by encouraging the college graduate students to do the best they
