Microaggressions include everyday comments or actions that could seem harmless, whether unintentional or intentional, that have the potential to transmit an offensive response. Even though, the following experience is not specifically from a classroom setting, it demonstrates a microaggression experience. A recent experience was when I went to a home improvement store with my parents. At the store, my mom asked a young woman for help in finding an item. The young woman responded by telling my mom to wait while she looked for someone who spoke Spanish that could help us. The young woman unintentionally transmitted an offensive response by stating that we would not have been able to understand her. However, she was stunned when I stepped in and asked her again for what my mom was looking for. A trigger warning is a statement that cautions the audience about the information that will be presented because it could contain distressing material. I do not believe that we should avoid distressing or unpleasant material in a classroom. If unpleasant material is avoided, then students are not being expose to real life experiences. Most importantly, by abandoning restrictive speech codes. Universities should not support trigger warnings and instead let professors be free to use trigger warnings. The article also strongly encourages universities to teach incoming students how to practice cognitive behavioral therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy has many benefits that would help students in improving their mental health. It is fairly fast and easy to learn and still effective way long after the treatment is stopped. Best of all, it could be inexpensive and not time consuming; therefore, leading to a win-win by both the students and the
