Throughout the novel The Catcher in the Rye we see Holden struggling to make connections with many different people and Phoebe being the only person he really trusts. The book shows us in a couple different ways how much of a problem recognizing uniqueness really is for him through Holden's attitude about people, his values for only true friendships, and his system to cope with rejection from others. Holden's attitude towards the way he thinks people really are is very prominent in the book. He uses the word phony countless times as a way of describing a person. He'd already told me about it about a hundred times. Every time he told it, it was different" (20). This is an example of Holden's conception of the truth behind Ackley being a phony. He is also always disapproving people for their self awareness and their wanting to live their live like a mature adult. That impart has to due with Holden's sense of innocence of not wanting to grow up and to do what the rest of the world is doing. His view of the world has to be of everyone being a self obsessed person who is always trying to top everyone else. Throughout the book he is always talking highly of her. "You'd like her. I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about. I mean you can even take her anywhere with you. If you take her to a lousy movie, for instance, she knows it's a lousy movie. If you take her to a pretty good movie, she knows it's a pretty good movie" (37). Holden really values his wonderful connection with her even with the age difference. He really does separate her from everyone else because for him she is the only real person out there. The only real person who is there from him and tries to help him cope with things. The only reason I think they actually really do have a great connection is because they are both so innocent and childish and get along together in that aspect. Which is different from everyone else Holden meets. Everyone he meets is much more mature than he is and has different values.
