The formal operational stage begins at approximately age twelve and lasts into adulthood. During this time, people develop the ability to think about abstract concepts. Skills such as logical thought, deductive reasoning, and systematic planning also emerge during this stage. An example from the movie could be when Malinda is told to pick an object out of a hat in art and draw it by the end of the year. Me being an artist I see it as a way to be more abstract. Just drawing a tree isn’t what the teacher is wanting from Malinda. Plus, I feel that he knows she is shy and doesn’t talk much so he is challenging her to use art to speak her mind.
