Have you ever had to overcome any sort of hardship? In the book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, we see many examples of overcoming adversity including running away in mexico to extreme situations. It can take a long time time and a strong will to fully accept who you are and be contempt with yourself.
In the book there are many examples of adversity one of the more prominent ones is Maya running away in Mexico in an area she knows nothing about. On page 247 it says,"I was never again to sense myself to solidly outside the pale of the human race." This is showing that Maya is seeing herself as a member of society and not an outcast. This junkyard society has shown Maya that everyone plays a role and everyone seems much happier when noone burdens himself with others job. This also shows maya no matter how you look you need to hold yourself higher than anyone else does. In this book one of the protagonists in the early stages of this book was Maya’s mothers boyfriend, Mr.Freeman. In this book Mr.Freeman caused the early problem he had raped Maya but Maya was morally confused as she was convinced it was her fault for thinking Mr.Freeman cared for her. In chapter 13 on page 85 it states,”I looked at his heavy face trying to look as if he would have liked me to say No. I said No.” This shows us Maya thinks how she thinks other people want her to think, and not how she herself would have answered. This leads us to believe that maya is not confident in herself to make the right decisions on her own and trusts the thoughts more than her own. As a child when you are the most impressionable, it is not wise to let a child rely off of someone else’s decision making skills and the child would become to dependant on others. Also in this book it
