Lauren Holland Mr. Mac English 9 OMM Essay In the novel Of Mice and Men two men travel together and attempt to find work in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. Many did not have friends at the time and would all try to keep out of trouble by minding their own business. At the time there were many issues involving people being racist, prejudice and more. In the novel many characters would suffer from alienation due to race, disability and gender. To start off, some are alienated from others because of race. Due to the time the story was written people were very racist and prejudice. An example of this would be crooks who is separated because he is black. In the story Crooks states how he is not wanted, excluded from others and through his tone and expression you can tell how it angers him. On page 68 Lennie asked “ Why ain’t you wanted?”, Crooks responded “ ‘cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Throughout the story Lennie experiences this from other workers on the ranch pointing out or picking on him for not being the brightest one.
