Isolation is when someone is singled out from everyone else. Of Mice and Men is a novella that follows two migrant workers named Lennie and George. It took place in California during the 1930s. At this time, many groups and people were isolated for being different. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the isolation of Crooks, Lennie, and Curley’s Wife illustrates that isolation is caused because people are different, and it negatively affects the isolated person. In the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Crooks is isolated due to him being black, which illustrates that isolation affects people negatively. In the story, Lennie goes over to Crooks’s room, but Crooks tells him to leave.

We can very simply see that this affects her negatively because she says that she gets lonely since no one wants to talk to her or have anything to do with her. The author writes, “Her face grew angry. What's the matter with me?" she cried. "Ain't I got a right to talk to nobody?” (Steinbeck, 87). This again communicates that being isolated negatively affects people. Curley’s wife gets angry because she is continually isolated from the rest of the ranch when she just wants to be treated like a normal person. We can see this negatively affects her because she starts crying out just to simply talk to someone. This also shows the negative effects isolation can have on a person. Overall, since Curley’s wife has been isolated from the rest of the ranch, we can see how isolation negatively affects people. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the isolation of Crooks, George, and Curley’s Wife illustrates that isolation negatively affects people. Due to Crooks being isolated for being black, George feeling isolated for thinking people like him are not cared about, and Curley’s wife being isolated for her “promiscuity”, we can see the negative effects that isolation has on people.
