When watching movies or reading books, you may notice a pattern or similarity in the stories. This is called an archetype. The hero’s journey is one example. Authors have different ways of expressing their thoughts in their hero’s journey. The Hobbit is about the journey of Bilbo Baggins and 13 dwarves who journey to get their treasure back.

Through characters such as dragons,elves,goblins and a hobbit Tolkein uses their similarities and differences to convay that people cant be defined by steriotypes. The novel uses the mystical journey of 13 dwarfs and a hobbit to show how people can change and defy steriotypes through their own experiences and adventures. Character Archetypes In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy was accompanied by a hunting group of companions on her journey to the Emerald City. Her companions consisted of Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion, who were loyal and willing to face hardships and ordeals in order to stay together. All wanting seemingly unattainable things, they came along to meet the Wizard of Oz.
In The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, The dwarves portray the hunting group of companions archetype because they helped Bilbo by leading the way around, they made Bilbo feel comforted by singing for him and they protected Bilbo throughout the novel. The hunting group of companions are loyal companions that will risk their lives to protect someone or a group of people. The dwarves are this archetype because companions lead the way for someone that they care about. The dwarves took Bilbo back home without getting lost.

An archetype is a term of Greek origin that is commonly defined as a recurrent symbol or motif in literature, art or mythology. “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and “Noah and the Flood” are both stories that are stories from different millennia long ago. Through the characters, theology, culture, and setting, when reading “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and “Noah and the Flood” it is immediately apparent that there are numerous similarities as well as differences that separate the two. Nonetheless they are reminiscent of a common archetype.
