G Calpurnia is a better mother figure than aunt Alexandria Y Calpurnia is a good mother figure R cal comforts scout when jem doesn’t want to be with her (pg.154) R she cleans them very well before she takes them to church, calls them her kids (pg. 156) R sticks up for the kids at church Y Aunt Alexandria is not a good mother figure
Aunt Alexandra’s relationship with Cal is also another example of how she supports segregation. In the text, Scout (Atticus’ daughter) finds out that Aunt Alexandra disapproved of him on the trail of defending a black man from her cousin Francis, “[Aunt Alexandra said that Atticus] turned out a nigger-lover and we'll never be able to walk the streets of Maycomb agin. He's ruinin' the family, that's what he's doin'" (Lee 110). This demonstrates how ashamed she is that her brother is defending a black man and that she is scared of what other people will think. One more example that Aunt Alexandra supports segregation is that she is very concerned about the children and Cal’s relationship.
So as you can see, Aunt Alexandra has changed not only socially, but at a very foray type pace that is very noticeable. She would at first hate colored people and as well as disrespecting and disagreeing with Atticus and Scout to being a loving, nice and respectful person to all no matter how nebulous it was to
(Lee 134)” Calpurnia is a great mother figure, in my opinion Aunt Alexandra is only a good mother figure. She came to live with the Finch’s to help Atticus for when Scout starts growing into a woman. Aunt Alexandra says, “ We decided that it would be best for you to have some feminine influence. (Lee 170)”
Aunt Alexandra is a conservative woman who is conscious of propriety and class. So she wanted Jem and Scout to live in a certain way especially Scout, She was worried Scout was too much of a tomboy. Aunt Alexandra was also concerned that Atticus was too careless in his parenting. He allowed his kids to do whatever they wanted. She was also concerned that Calpurnia had too much say and authority over the lives of the children with the absence of their mother.
Calpurnia serves as an amazing role model and mother figure to the children, and yet Aunt Alexandra wants to fire her. She had raised Jem and Scout, and plays an indispensable part of their lives, showering them with discipline, structure, and love. Aunt Alexandra, however, barely existed in the children 's lives up until she moved into the Finch’s home, yet she inflicts great injustice on Calpurnia by failing to recognize the necessitous part of the family that Calpurnia fills. Scout even overhears Aunt Alexandra saying, "...you 've got to do something about her. You 've let things go on too long Atticus, too long.
Atticus attributes his sister’s behavior to the fact that she’s never had a girl of her own to care for. Aunt Alexandra is a grandmother and it makes sense that she would be stuck in her old ways, Scout even says, Aunt Alexandra fitted into the world of Maycomb like a hand into a glove, but never into the world of Jem and me. (13. 131). However, as we see through the book she grows and changes eventually becoming a mother to
3) Scout fights with Francis and Cecil Jacobs because they called Atticus a ‘nigger-lover”. 4) Aunt Alexandra disapproves of Scout because she is non-ladylike and grows worse every year. 5) Uncle Jack later regrets punishing Scout because he realized he punished the wrong person after Scout told him
Understand?’” (pg.136). The most important or relevant time that Atticus sticks up for his belief that Calpurnia deserves the utmost respect no matter her skin color is when Aunt Alexandra tells him she thinks Calpurnia shouldn't live with them and be around the children. Atticus says: “Alexandra, Calpurina’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years’”
Aunt Alexandra tries to say something to Atticus about the kids and doing something wrong. “Sister, I do the best I can with them! It had something to do with my overalls.”(Lee 108). Aunt Alexandra was trying to tell Atticus to make Scout change into something more lady like.
Grace Merriweather, and Bob Ewell. Aunt Alexandra is one character that is prejudice against African Americans by not liking Calpurnia taking care of Jem and Scout. Aunt Alexandra is also racist against people like the Cunninghams because they are in a lower-class than the Finch’s. Mrs. Merriweather is another character that also does not agree with what Atticus is doing for Tom which leads to her showing behaviors that are prejudice against Tom for being African American. Also, by showing disrespect to her servants, Mrs. Merriweather shows people that she is racist.
With both kids, no longer at home, her aunt Alexandra cares for Atticus in her absence. Her lack of presence in her hometown has proved to
Their father, Atticus has a black client who is accused by a crime that he didn't commit. Atticus does a lot to protect this man from danger. He goes to his home a couple of times, he waits in front of the building where they keep him, to protect him from the racist people who
In multiple ways, Calpurnia is a better mother figure than Aunt Alexandra. Calpurnia is a good mother for multiple reasons. First, the children like her. This is important because they respect her as well. If they did not like her as much, they probably would not listen as well or want to do what she asks them to.
To begin, Aunt Alexandra is one of the many voices of hypocrisy in the book. Aunt Alexandra is a symbol of old southern charm and what woman were supposed to act like in the 1930s. She lives by the fact that family is the most important thing in life. She judges
