Alayna Griffin Mr. DeBella Advanced English 11 30 April 2023 Avoiding Information Most can agree that people will ignore or avoid you when you're telling them something they don't want to hear. Even when you show evidence or back up what you're saying with facts, they continue to avoid it. This is common in a lot of people and has been researched why. In the story Hamlet, information avoidance is shown through the characters. The authors show how Ophelia avoided news from her father because she thinks he is wrong. In the short story ¨Lamb To The Slaughter¨, the main character implies avoidance when getting told unwanted news from her husband. The main character shows her reaction through violence. This reveals how most anyone reacts in some way to the information they avoid. Information avoidance is very apparent in the text ¨Lamb To The Slaughter¨, because of how the main character reacted to news. This is a continuous pattern throughout text and in life. Mary, the wife of the husband in the story, gets talked to. The text does not quite specify what he says to her. Readers can infer it to be a divorce, or he cheated on her. While it could be either one, both answers are not what she wants to hear at all. His actions This lead to her is why she acts the way she does by killing him. While violence is not always the answer, others deal with bad news from their significant other by revenge or just avoiding it until revenge occurs. Avoidance is very apparent in this story, but also has been researched and examined. Some might consider how someone might be raised to think that way and avoid information. Certain people might think that's the only reason for avoidance. Research shows that might not always be the case. The text states ¨People have to recognize environmental stimuli as positive or negative and to decide how to respond to them appropriately¨(Vincent 13).
